On the night of 20 July 2023, two militants detonated improvised explosive devices outside the Tehsil government compound in the northwestern town of Bara in the Khyber district — located in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. The explosions occurred at the compound’s gates while the militants attempted to enter the premises. Local officials stated that a shootout between the militants and police officers damaged various buildings in the compound, which houses the Bara police station and other government buildings. At least three police officers were killed in the attack and seven others were injured. Both assailants were also killed in the gunbattle. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack; however, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (Pakistani Taliban) frequently carries out attacks in the region.
