On 22 December 2022, the Fiji police commissioner announced a military deployment across the country to assist police officers with maintaining stability amid heightened tensions following the 14 December national election. Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama reported an increase in incidents of violence against ethnic Indians following the election, in which no political party won a clear majority of parliamentary seats. While a coalition of three parties led by the main opposition People’s Alliance claimed to have won a majority in the election, Bainimarama’s Fiji First Party has not conceded defeat.
