On the evening of 20 June 2024, a mob attacked a police station and killed a tourist accused of blasphemy in the town of Madyan, located in the Swat district of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Police officers had taken the man accused of burning the Quran into custody for interrogation when the crowd launched an attack on the police station and set ablaze the building, along with a police vehicle. At least eight police officers were also injured in the unrest. Authorities have launched an investigation and are pursuing the perpetrators.
