Overnight on 28-29 December 2023, the Russian military carried out a significant air assault across Ukraine, prompting Ukrainian authorities to issue a nationwide air raid alert. According to Ukrainian officials, 122 missiles and dozens of drones — including cruise missiles, hypersonic Kinzhal missiles and Iran-made Shahed drones — were used in the attack that targeted the capital Kyiv and other cities across Ukraine, including Dnipro, Lviv, Odesa, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia. In Kyiv, the airstrikes hit residential buildings and a metro station. In southern Ukraine, air defense systems shot down at least 14 Russian missiles. At least 18 people were killed across the country and 182 others were injured. The Ukrainian military reportedly assesses the latest air assault as the biggest such attack since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The attack occurred three days after the Ukrainian military launched missile strikes on a Russian warship in the Russia-occupied Crimea region. Further drone and missile attacks on Ukraine is expected during the upcoming holiday weekend.
