On 31 October 2021, the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa issued a Security Alert regarding the security situation in Amhara, Afar and Tigray, which reads in part as follows: “The U.S. Embassy continues to closely track developments in northern Ethiopia and is aware of intensified fighting in the Amhara region, including around Dessie and Kombolcha. U.S. citizens in Amhara and Afar should monitor local media, be prepared to shelter in place if they are near areas of conflict and should strongly consider departing these areas.

“As previously communicated, the Tigray region does not have reliable communications connectivity. Basic services and essential items such as food, fuel and money remain limited. Mobility in the region is restricted and the U.S. Embassy is unable to contact American citizens in Tigray.”
