On 16 June 2023, the U.S. Embassy in Bamako issued a Security Alert, which reads in part as follows: “Voting for the constitutional referendum will be held on Sunday, June 18 at polling stations throughout Mali. This event may have a significant impact on traffic and large crowds are expected in polling locations. Large gatherings and demonstrations sometimes turn confrontational and can escalate into violence, resulting in the burning of tires, clashes with the police, blockage on the roads and bridges, throwing of rocks at vehicles, and the deployment of tear gas.”
