On 24 January 2024, Pakistani government officials placed security forces on high alert in the capital Islamabad and other major cities in light of intelligence suggesting heightened risks of suicide bombings perpetrated by Islamist militant groups in the lead-up to the 8 February general election. Security personnel are being deployed in and around government buildings in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Quetta and Peshawar, as well as along major urban roadways. Pakistani intelligence agency reports indicate that at least four Islamist extremist organizations intend to carry out attacks in the country during the general election period.
