At approximately 0730 local time on 20 July 2023 (1930 UTC on 19 July), a shooting occurred at a construction site on Queen Street in Auckland’s central business district. A gunman opened fire at the site while moving through a building to evade responding police officers. Authorities cordoned off several streets in the central business district, including Lower Albert street, Lower Hobson street, Quay street and Queen street, and advised residents to avoid the area. At least three people were killed, including the gunman. Five others were injured. Authorities have stated that the shooting was not terror-related. An increased police presence has since been maintained in Auckland, as well as in the cities of Dunedin, Hamilton and Wellington.
