As of 12 May 2023, the situation in Islamabad remains tense amid protests following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Authorities in Islamabad have announced that a previous ban on public gatherings of four or more people will remain in effect during Khan’s court hearing and subsequent release from police custody later the same day. Additionally, military personnel maintain a heavy presence throughout the capital metropolitan area.

Representatives of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf party have called for a demonstration in support of Khan near the Srinagar Highway in Islamabad, which military personnel have already blocked off. Small-scale protests and gatherings continue to occur in Peshawar and Karachi. Meanwhile, thousands of Khan supporters have gathered in Zaman Park, near Khan’s private residence, in anticipation of his return to Lahore. Approximately 500 people have been arrested in Islamabad since protests began on 9 May.
