At approximately 0930 local time (0630 UTC) on 1 October 2023, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at the entrance of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the capital Ankara. The assailant was killed in the blast, and security personnel at the site killed his accomplice during a shootout. Two police officers were injured in the event. The two assailants reportedly hijacked a vehicle in the city of Kayseri, located approximately 260 km (160 mi) southeast of Ankara, after killing the motorist and drove the vehicle to the entrance of the government building in Ankara. The outlawed group Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) claimed responsibility for the attack.
