During the morning of 18 November 2021, security personnel in the capital Khartoum deployed tear gas against demonstrators who had erected improvised barricades the previous night following protests throughout the day on 17 November. There were no reports of injuries. Meanwhile, a doctors’ union associated with the demonstrators announced that 15 protesters died on 17 November; government officials contend that 89 security personnel suffered injuries, and that one protester died while approximately 30 more were treated for effects of tear gas inhalation. Activists and opponents of the military-led government leaders have called for an escalation in protest actions in response to the protester death toll, the highest since the military removed the civilian leadership on 25 October.
