On 2 May 2023, police officers deployed tear gas to disperse a delegation of Azimio La Umoja opposition coalition politicians in Nairobi’s Central Business District. The event occurred as the opposition politicians were attempting to reach the offices of President William Ruto, also located in the Central Business District, to deliver a petition demanding action to combat rising food, fuel and electricity prices. Elsewhere in the city, Azimio La Umoja-organized protests alleging fraud in the 2022 Kenyan general election continued in the Mathare neighborhood, with police officers firing tear gas to disperse demonstrators there as well. Azimio La Umoja protests resumed on 28 April despite a 26 March indefinite ban on protests imposed by the government. Azimio La Umoja leaders have called for protests to continue into 4 May. There were no reports of injuries due to the violence.
