On 18 July 2023, thousands of Israelis blocked highways and gathered at train stations, disrupting traffic and transportation services throughout Tel Aviv as part of the planned “Day of Disruption” to protest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposed judicial reform. Protesters blocked Tel Aviv’s central Ayalon Highway for approximately two and a half hours. On Kaplan Street — a main thoroughfare — police officers repeatedly deployed water cannons and mounted police attempted to disperse the crowd. Additional protests occurred in cities throughout the country, including Haifa and Jerusalem. Police officers arrested nearly 50 individuals in central Israel for participating in the protests. In an unrelated event, rail services were temporarily suspended nationwide due to a technical malfunction that has since been resolved.
