At approximately 1300 local time (1100 UTC) on 26 August 2022, a motorist drove his van into the patios of two eateries located on the Rue Saint-Michel thoroughfare in the capital Brussels. The driver of the van veered into the crowded verandas and fled the scene. Six people suffered minor injuries. Security personnel located the vehicle nearby and are checking it for possible explosive materials. A manhunt for the driver is underway. Following the event, Belgium’s Organization for Threat Analysis Coordination (OCAM) raised the terrorism threat alert from Level 2 to Level 3 for high traffic areas in Brussels, indicating that an attack is likely and possible.
