On 18 June 2024, South Korean soldiers fired warning shots at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) after approximately 20-30 North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the military demarcation line that separates the border between North and South Korea. The South Korean military stated that the group immediately returned after the warning shots were fired and loudspeaker broadcasts issued warnings. The breach was likely an accident as the North Korean soldiers were working to fortify the border. The South Korean government also deemed a similar incident on 9 June to be an accidental crossing since the area marking the border is overgrown with trees and plants. According to South Korean authorities, activity has increased near the border as the North Korean military is working to clear vegetation and build fortifications on its side.
