Opposition groups plan to hold countrywide anti-government protests in Thailand on 12 January 2020. Approximately 10,000 people are expected to attend the event in the capital Bangkok, which organizers have titled “Run Against Dictatorship;” a pro-government counterprotest is also scheduled to take place in the city, with approximately 2,500 participants registered to attend. Although authorities are allowing the event to proceed in Bangkok, provincial officials in Ubon Ratchathani and Phayao have denied permission to organize associated demonstrations. Opposition groups organized the demonstrations in response to allegations that the government manipulated the results of the parliamentary election in March 2019 as well as concerns that it plans to disband the opposition Future Forward Party due to recent charges against the party’s leader, which supporters claim are politically motivated.
