On 8 April 2024, the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu issued a Security Alert, which reads in part as follows: “The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi has received information about threats to multiple locations in Mogadishu, including Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu. All movements of U.S. Embassy personnel have been cancelled for Tuesday, April 9, 2024…The U.S. Embassy in Somalia reminds U.S. citizens that terrorists continue to plot kidnappings, bombings, and other attacks in Somalia. They may conduct attacks with little or no warning, targeting airports and seaports, checkpoints, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, shopping areas, and other areas where large crowds gather and Westerners frequent, as well as government, military, and Western convoys.”

Analyst Comment: Several international airlines — including Fly Dubai, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines — canceled flights to Mogadishu following the alert. Travelers intending to travel to Mogadishu should check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
