On 19 November 2020, security personnel deployed tear gas to disperse anti-government protesters who had gathered and set tires on fire along the thoroughfares 9a Avenida and 10a Calle, located near the congressional building in Zone 1 of the capital, Guatemala City. Clashes between demonstrators, who were protesting the recently passed federal budget, and law enforcement personnel left at least two people injured. Police officers temporarily closed roads in the affected areas until the protesters dispersed. While the next protest is scheduled to occur at 1400 local time on 21 November at the Plaza de la Constitución in Guatemala City, unplanned protests may occur before then.
