On 13 March 2024, the U.S. Consulate in Rio de Janeiro issued a Security Alert, which reads in part as follows: “U.S. citizens in Rio de Janeiro should be alert to a recent increase in robberies and assaults in the immediate surrounding area of the U.S. Consulate in Rio de Janeiro on Avenida Rio Branco near the Cinelândia metro stop.
“The U.S. Consulate encourages all travelers in Rio de Janeiro to be aware of their surroundings and belongings and avoid having their mobile devices visible in public. If you become the victim of a criminal act, remain calm and do not resist. If you need immediate assistance from local authorities, please call 190.”
